To keep it all in one place, let's talk about the draft here.
Seems to be a run on goalies going early...

Hehe, definitely. How a few early picks can change the outlined "plans" and set the tone. Do you adjust or stick through it hoping you'll somehow get one of your options later on? Got to love the dynamics of it all.

I'm going to have to rethink my plans. I definitely was not anticipating an early run on goalies and that changes a lot of things.

Was in the same boat, didn't expect to reach for a goalie so soon. Usually there's always a goalie run at some point but I wasn't expecting it from the get go Went back and forth between Andersen and a couple of more "established" names since I'm a bit concerned about Gibson chasing that starter job and the usual BB-esque goalie dynamics but here's hoping for a prolonged ahl stint for Gibson since he's the only one out of the 3 that is waiver exempt.

I'm in the same boat. I had a list of players that I was planning on selecting, was even considering moving down but the run of goalies really changed my plans.

It's nice, I like challenge. A few names I had on my list were picked early (Holtby, Varlamov, Andersen, Voracek)

The drafts never go according to plan do they? Can't wait to see how the next few rounds unfold.

No, I learned that in my first expansion draft. I spent a lot of time creating a list and by the 2nd round my list was in the garbage.

So true, it's always sooner rather than later that those lists hit the bin Hence, rather than targeting specific players here, I've tried to "allocate" a certain amount of cap percentage to different areas of the team ( F - D - G etc ) and made a few different layouts of options how to "get there". Hopefully that will lead to less panicked moves in the rounds ahead and provide me with some added flexibility. If not, there's always more room in the bin

haha very true Christian and not a bad idea. I try to determine which position I want to target with each pick but even that may not work out because I don't want to reach for a player just because he plays the position I am targeting.

I have a list of about 50 guys that I put into tiers around where I think they'll be available. Never tried this before, so I've had to change on the fly a few times already.

Man with all the goalies going in the first round I was afraid I wouldn't be able to get a decent starter. Now I'm hoping the other player I have in mind doesn't get drafted before my pick tomorrow.

Darn it Devin, you just had to pull a Gibson out of the hat Had an evil plan of snagging him later on and cover my bases in regards to goalies. Now I'm just scared that you know something that I've overlooked Oh and honorable mention to Andrew for an excellent pick, was hoping with all the goalie love early on he might fall towards the bottom end of a 2nd round but alas.

Christian, I didn't have much of a choice. While there were still some good goalies out there they didn't fit the mold I was looking for with my team. I just read a report that said Gibson will start the season as the #1 goalie . Monahan wouldn't have made it past my early 2nd round pick because that was who I was targeting. Such a solid player at such a young age.

Monahan and Johnny Hockey, the two Flames I wanted most off the board. Good picks.
Who I pick next pretty much will be based on who goes in the next couple picks, lots of ways this could play out.

We saw goalies take a huge hit in round 1, my guess is it will even out and will be a combination of everything here on out. Although, 2 D are already off to board to open round 2... maybe D take a big hit here.

What's the thinking behind the Sharks taking Rask and Varlamov with his captain and 1st round pick? That's 12.9 million tied up in goalies until 18-19 when Varlamov comes off the books..

Too early to judge IMO. He could easily be picking a goalie just so he could ship one off for a nice return later... but who knows. If he let's one ride the bench for the whole year it's a waste of a pick, but that's just my opinion.

I don't think he's going to be able to get 1st round pick kind of value imo

either its a trade chip or he's banking on using an IR spot if one goes down lol . judging from the goalie run that was early he may be able to work a nice deal with some of the GMs with later picks

Well he can also play the matchups, some weeks one guy may be playing much more favorable teams. But like you said, I doubt he gets anything of similar value of a first rounder in an expansion draft should he decide to trade one.

But this just bring me back around to the fact that it's 12.9 million in goalies. That's almost 20%!

It is a lot of cash to throw at one position, especially when only one can start. It'll be interesting to see what he does going forward, but all I know is that if he's looking for a trade partner... look no further! Would love a goalie.
