I have a general rule in fantasy hockey: never trade top players in the league, because you will never recover the value that they bring while only taking up one roster slot. This rule has won me a lot of leagues. I am breaking it in this case because as many of you have noticed, I am going with a youth movement in this league. Malkin is going to have a big year, and who knows if this league will still even be active by the time some of these guys are making a real impact, but at the end of the day, I would be wasting a couple of very productive years from Malkin on my mediocre team.
In two or three years when my team is all coming together, I will be happy to throw away unproven prospects for elite talent. I hope that until get there, I can use depth to eventually help me compete with the big boys. There is no point in having a massive asset like Malkin being wasted on a team that is not ready to win the championship just yet.
I chose those 3 prospects because I needed D and W, and because Larkin may actually play sooner than a lot of my guys. I didn't want to take a big deal that was only players who are 3 or so years away because Lord knows I have enough of those already.

Confirm.
This was a tough, tough deal for me to make. Seth is behind Weber and Josi for PP time, but is still a stud and a enormously talented stud at that. Drouin will eventually be really good whether it's this season or next, and Larkin is one of my favorite American players right now. However, I have Barzal who is a little behind Larkin, but sets me up nicely down the middle in the future, Malkin is Malkin, and I pick up and extra 12th while moving up in the 13th. This was a tough deal to make and I'm sure in 3 or 4 years it may be a gross overpayment, but this automatically makes my team grossly talented.

Approved (1-0).
Feel like it's a bit of an overpayment from the Pens, lots of good young players going over to the Whalers that sets him up nicely in this league. But I also think Malkin is in for a big year and is the best player in this deal.

Malkin is one of the top players in the NHL, and long story short it shouldn't be a surprise that it translates into fantasy production. Drouin + S. Jones should become elite players in the NHL/Fantasy, but it's nothing close to a guarantee. This is potential for proven results and it makes sense that Pens is giving up more assets since IMO potential is not worth as much as proven results (there's exceptions to every rule, but not for this trade).

Steep price but the one that is needed for a prime asset like Malkin.

Classic case of giving up solid future assets to win now.
