In my league with 8 minors last year I was able to accomplish the same exact thing. I heard of and signed Panarin before everyone else and then turned around and traded him for a larger package.
You can still accomplish the same thing with 15 minors spots.

7 rounds is a lot. I would be good with 4-5 rounds though.

I guess I'm not understanding what the downside is to having a deep minors system. We have a deep league, it doesn't make any sense to limit minors to 15, we should be rewarding knowledgeable GMs who do their homework and draft well, it seems very straightforward to me.

It's just pointless to go that deep. 50% or more of the players in your minors will never make the NHL. I personally just don't see the point of signing undrafted NCAA players to be in your minors when the chance they make the NHL and become impactful is like 1%.
This is just my opinion. I have always disliked leagues with extremely deep minors. Like I said I was in a league that had 30 minors and I thought it was pointless. Teams had players that had no value and would never even make the NHL.

I mean if this passes a vote than I want what most GM's think would be enjoyable for the league but I will voice my opinion about why I may like or dislike something.
We also have the ability to add minors spots after this year. It is easier to add minors spots than take minors spots away so just keep that in mind. Do we start at 15 and then judge it after a year and if it needs to be increased than we do it next offseason or do we go full blown increase right now? Just things to think about.

I guess what I don't get is who is really losing by having 20 slots. You are saying it's pointless but every year, there are guys from the later rounds who surprise. Some people really enjoy following the different leagues and signing players like that. Sure, you need to have a cap, as people will just sign every name available.
For the point about undrafted NCAA players on farms: every league I am in requires that to sign a prospect, their rights need to be held by someone. If an NHL team holds the rights to the player, that player at least has something positive going for it. You should be able to just snake anyone out there who plays hockey.

There's a difference between pointless and unproductive. We all know that real NHL teams struggle to find impactful players past the 2nd round in the draft. But Jamie Benn was drafted in the 5th round, the Red Wings have gone to the playoffs 24 years in a row based on productive drafting and a deep minors system. I'll go along with whatever the most GMs want to do, but the argument that it's pointless and therefore isn't worth the effort doesn't resonate with me. It seems logical to model the league based on the actual NHL as it regards drafting and minors just as we are doing with contracts

Compton the downside is two things:
1. The upkeep - its a lot of work to run the league and track everyone. While this can be fixed, it will take more league development to get to this point 2. GM Activity - While we want this to be a deep competitive league, we don't want it to be a full time job. Many GMs are on here to have a good deep league and may not be concerned with 4th/5th rounders that never make it out of AHL. While I'd love to have every 24 GMs be like this, it's just not feasible
These issues are fixable, which is why I'm enjoying this discussion and seeing how we can improve the farm system.
