Hey guys I had two ideas for the league that might make it more to win and to brag to everyone else about it. The first is that we need some sort of cup to win. This can be anything from a little shot glass to a miniature stanley cup. You know something other that a congratulatory post on an online forum. The second idea is that at the beginning of each season each GM pitches in $5 or whatever to a gofundme and the winner of the cup that year get to donate it to a charity of his choice so you could have a situation in the finals where cancer research is pitted against a food shelf. Interested to hear if there is any support for either of these ideas.

That's a pretty unique prize Pens, I like the idea. It's funny you bring the topic of league prizes up because EDM, CAR and myself were actually talking about various prize options just a couple days ago. Here is what we came up with and we wanted your opinion (the league in general). --- There would be three categories that all receive a prize; (1) The league winner/cup winner, (2) the presidents trophy (most points in regular season), and (3) GM of the year (winner is decided by league voting). Here are the three prizes:
- Additional 1st round pick in upcoming prospect draft (last pick in 1st round) - An additional contract extension - An additional compliance buyout
How it would work is The Cup Winner gets first choice out of the three available prizes above. After he chooses, there would be two prizes leftover. The Presidents Trophy winner would get to choose second which leaves one remaining prize for the GM of year.

I think BUF's idea is great.
Not that Pittsburgh's isn't, I just find it hard to ask anyone to give money when we don't know their financial situation. Some kind of wall of fame as a forum banner could be done for the cup winners though, or something to that effect.
I think we have something here.

I think we should get a real life size replica of the Stanley cup, engrave it with the winners name, I will fly to wherever the winner lives and deliver the Stanley cup to them wearing a tuxedo and white gloves haha

I like the idea of that but I do have some concerns with it. First of all, a first round pick might be a bit steep. Also, what happens if the cup winner also happens to be the presidents trophy winner? I dont like the idea of a GM being rewarded 2, potentially even 3 rewards.

I absolutely love the idea about donation to a charity of cup winners choice, great one Pat. Aside from a noble aspect of it, every extra little bit of flavor adds to the competition.
About the other propositions, I'm in favor of such rewards as long as it's not something that massively enhances GM's position in regards to others.

Now that you have an exotic hockey market represented here, everyone is lined up to bring the cup to Croatia *sighs* even if it's just a replica. That's alright though, closest I've been to a real deal is 100 miles away when Kopitar brought it to Slovenia. So a replica will do. Who knows, maybe if you "let" me win for 2 decades, you can take turns with bringing the cup over here so that everyone can enjoy the extended holiday stay in Croatia

I mean I've played in leagues with $50 buy ins

Instead of the 1st round pick how about an extra $1m in cap for one year. Seems more on par with the other 2 options value wise

The added cap sounds like a good idea to me.

RedWings, it's kind of like the real NHL where the Presidents Trophy gets a bonus and the Stanley Cup winner gets a bonus. In my other league (although it has only been 2 years) I haven seen the Presidents Trophy winner win the cup

A late first might be a bit much for the league winner lol, if only because those picks are really coveted and the building teams will have to give up real value to acquire them. In a more shallow league, I think that would be awesome but in a league like this with a cap and 24 teams, those picks become huge.
Maybe a mid 2nd for the winner, and a mid 3rd for the runner up?
I would rather give the top team a chance to have a shiny prospect than give them cap space so they can only get better. Also, it keeps the league from having really old franchises which owners are more likely to walk out on rather than rebuild with nothing.

I like all the ideas presented above; but not a big fan of the additional cap space. I think additional tools like a draft pick or an added extension are good ideas, but something like additional salary cap give the team a huge advantage.

i agree with Julian... I'm all for additional picks/extensions but the cap definitely gives a massive advantage. Imagine if the real Blackhawks got more cap space after their cup wins... they'd still have big buff, ladd, sharp, saad, etc. As a fan i wouldnt complain, but as an opposing GM i'd be pretty rattled. A late first round prospect pick and an extra UFA extension gets my vote -- especially if we are going to increase the salary cap to reflect the NHLs cap space

Same here guys, not that into added cap space as it tilts the field quite considerately.
Apart from that, I do like an extra extension and a late pick ( 3rd round ) as prizes. Anything that adds that little bit of extra incentive but doesn't boost you up tremendously. Though I'd make the picks non tradable for their winners.

I'm good with tossing a couple coins into the pot.

Would be in favor of $5 fee to the pot for the winner. Extra pick(s) I think are the most appropriate reward for the winner.
Cheers

I love Pat's idea about the gofundme so I'm down with either that or to sweeten the deal for the winner.
