Christian thats so kickass. Whats the fanbase like in Croatia? Surprisingly, for a non traditional hockey market, the game always had it's loyal followers. True, in numbers that weren't anywhere near the "usual suspects" ( soccer, basketball, handball etc. ) that always had more appeal to the masses. But those that stayed with hockey from it's conception here are still rather tenacious about their loyalties. There were good times through the decades but also extremely bleak periods where it got really gloom and felt like there would be no way to climb up from that hole. In short, the story started in 1894 when a skating section was founded. First game on natural ice was held in 1916. And then the first game played under Canadian rules was held in 1924. Following that, in 1935, the Association for Skating and Ice hockey was founded. Throughout the 30's, 4 clubs were funded and following the WWII is a period that is usually referred as one of the more prosperous time for Croatian Ice hockey. Usual ups and downs followed till the mid 80's when some bigger companies got involved with KHL Medvescak Zagreb, so money started talking and good foreign players got signed for the club. They dominated domestic competitions and played a big role in European cups. After the crash of former country in '91. the money was gone and the dark ages for the hockey in Croatia arrived. All clubs were reduced to amateur level and the only competition left to them was a National Croatian League. The problem was that the league consisted of only 4 amateur clubs. The infrastructure was, and to this day is, extremely poor ( just a few suitable rinks throughout Croatia - and most of those shut down from spring to fall ) and with no funding, things didn't look good. Out of those 4 clubs, Medvescak Zagreb pulled ahead and in 2007. they joined a Slovenian league. 2 years later they got invited to an Austrian league - EBEL, which consisted of top Austrian and Slovenian clubs along with a club from Hungary and Medvescak. Following 4 seasons in EBEL, in '13. we got invited to KHL with a guaranteed spot for 3 years. First year we scraped into playoff. We bombed in the 2nd season so we'll see how the 3rd one will go. At least, we're getting to see some really good hockey again here in Zagreb ![8-)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cool.png) As for myself, I lived near and played handball at a multi function sports hall that was at a time the only indoor rink available in Zagreb. So I got a front row seat throughout the 80's as Medveskac began it's rise. Just around that time, we had an experimental tv station airing one nhl game per week as a re-run on Mondays at noon. Loving sports and being a hockey fan I never missed those. As luck would have it, majority of those games were Leafs games. They grew on me and I stayed with them ever since. Scraping by trying to find any possible information back then. As lousy as those dial-up connections have been back in the days, that was my only outlet that allowed me to follow them through. With the internet evolving, I was happy as a kid in a candy store when online radio feeds emerged. To this day I never forgot the feeling of utter bewilderment while I was listening to the Leafs - Islanders playoff game. Middle of the night, staring into a blank monitor when the broadcasters stopped their broadcast for 5-10 minutes as a protest because they thought the refs were biased. Felt like an eternity. First chance I got, Gamecenter became my best friend and it's been like that through numerous nights. So, to return to the question at hand, numbers aren't that big but the fanbase is loyal and starved for some quality hockey. Hence you'll find that most of the Croatians that got hooked into NHL are pretty passionate about it. And now that I've hit you with this wall of text, I'll thank those that had the patience to stick through it ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png)

That was a crazy - eerie thing to see. He stood up and the blood literally was squirting out of his neck! You could hear a pin drop in the barn with everyone agast - took forever to get ice cleaned up - pool was about the size of the crease.
